UPDATE: The Los Angeles Dodgers are grappling with a critical outfield dilemma just as they gear up for the final stretch of the season. Manager Dave Roberts confirmed this week that the team is not considering moving superstar Mookie Betts back to right field, despite mounting concerns over defensive struggles from current outfielders.
As the Dodgers prepare for a pivotal series against the San Diego Padres this weekend, the urgency to resolve their outfield issues is palpable. With only 34 games left in the regular season, the team currently ranks just 19th in Major League Baseball for wins above replacement in corner outfield positions and 22nd in defensive metrics, according to Fangraphs.
“We have not talked about right field at all,” Roberts stated, emphasizing confidence in Betts’ performance at shortstop. However, the Dodgers’ outfield challenges are undeniable as they seek to solidify their playoff position.
Currently, the outfield lineup features Teoscar Hernández in right, who has struggled defensively with a -1 defensive runs saved (DRS) and -9 outs above average (OAA), and Michael Conforto in left with a .186 batting average. The team’s struggles were highlighted during a recent loss to Colorado, where both players made critical errors.
Roberts has considered shifting Hernández to left field, where he has shown slightly better defensive capabilities, but needs a reliable option to fill the right field spot. The team’s only potential alternative on the roster is Alex Call, who has only started eight games since joining the Dodgers. Call has shown promise, batting .281 with a recent four-hit game against the Rockies, but remains unproven in a primary role.
The Dodgers are also eyeing reinforcements from the injured list. On Thursday, Kike Hernández and Hyeseong Kim began rehab assignments in Triple-A, both of whom could provide much-needed defensive upgrades upon their return. Kike has been sidelined with an elbow injury since May, while Kim’s versatility could allow for a more stable outfield presence.
The situation is further complicated with Tommy Edman still recovering from an ankle injury that has hindered his ability to return to play. The Dodgers are hopeful for Edman’s versatility, but his health status remains uncertain.
Roberts is cautious about moving Betts back to right field, stating, “I think that’s a fair question, but I don’t think that we’re there quite yet.” Despite speculation about a potential shift, Betts has excelled at shortstop, ranking third in the majors for DRS at the position this season.
As the Dodgers struggle to find a solution, the pressure is mounting. With the postseason looming, they must improve their outfield performance to secure a spot in the playoffs. The next few weeks will be critical, as the team seeks to either develop their current players or find new options to bolster their roster.
The urgency of the Dodgers’ situation cannot be overstated. As they enter a crucial phase of the season, fans and analysts alike will be watching closely to see how the team addresses these pressing challenges. The outcome could significantly impact their quest for a second consecutive World Series title.
