Former football manager Dick Advocaat has stepped down as head coach of the Caribbean nation of Curacao just four months before their debut at the FIFA World Cup. Advocaat’s resignation, attributed to personal reasons related to his daughter’s health, means he will not lead the team in their first-ever appearance at the tournament.
Advocaat, who previously managed clubs such as Rangers and Sunderland, guided Curacao through a historic qualification campaign, culminating in their place at the World Cup finals. The team achieved this milestone by finishing at the top of their CONCACAF group, ahead of notable teams like Jamaica and Trinidad & Tobago.
Advocaat Reflects on His Tenure
The 78-year-old Dutchman described Curacao’s qualification as the “craziest thing” he has accomplished in nearly four decades of coaching. He expressed pride in his players, staff, and the football federation, stating, “I consider qualifying the smallest nation in the world for the World Cup one of the highlights of my career.”
Despite his excitement for the tournament, Advocaat emphasized his commitment to family, saying, “I have always said that family comes before football. So this is a self-evident decision.” His departure necessitates a swift transition for the team as they prepare for a friendly match against Scotland at Hampden Park on May 30, 2023.
Leadership Transition and Future Plans
Curacao’s football federation will appoint Fred Rutten, a former defender for the Netherlands, as the new head coach. Rutten has a wealth of experience, having previously managed prominent clubs like PSV, Anderlecht, and Feyenoord. In a statement regarding his appointment, Rutten expressed respect for Advocaat’s decision and acknowledged the challenges ahead. “It is truly an honour to continue his work. Curacao can expect the same dedication and commitment from me,” he stated.
Curacao will kick off their World Cup journey with a match against Germany in Houston on June 14, 2023. As they prepare for this historic event, the team is focused on maintaining the momentum generated under Advocaat’s leadership, aiming to make a significant impact on the global stage.
The resignation of Dick Advocaat marks a significant moment for Curacao, whose footballing history has taken a remarkable turn with their World Cup qualification. As they navigate this transition, both players and fans remain hopeful for a successful campaign in the tournament.
