UPDATE: The Detroit Red Wings will honor legendary player Sergei Fedorov by retiring his iconic No. 91 tonight at Little Caesars Arena. The ceremony, set to begin at 5:30 PM before the game against the Carolina Hurricanes, marks a monumental moment in franchise history, finally mending a relationship that seemed irreparable two decades ago.
Fedorov, a key figure in the Red Wings’ success from 1990-91 to 2002-03, was integral in securing three Stanley Cups for the team. Inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame in 2015, Fedorov’s contributions are celebrated as he becomes the ninth player in franchise history to have his number retired, joining legends like Gordie Howe and Steve Yzerman.
After leaving the Red Wings in 2003 to join the Anaheim Ducks, Fedorov faced boos upon his return. However, the past bitterness has faded, culminating in this long-awaited honor. “I had no idea what he’s going to (say) and eventually he broke the news… it was overwhelming,” Fedorov shared, reflecting on the moment he received the call from Chris Ilitch, the team’s governor and CEO.
Fedorov’s accolades include the Hart Trophy as NHL MVP in 1994 and two Selke Trophies as the league’s best defensive forward. He was part of the famed “Russian Five” and played alongside numerous Hall of Famers, making him one of the franchise’s all-time greats.
Former coach Scotty Bowman, who guided Fedorov for nine seasons, expressed his pride in the ceremony, stating, “It’s good that (they’re) doing it because he deserves it.” Bowman’s praise for Fedorov highlighted his unique ability to excel offensively while also contributing defensively, a rarity among players of his era.
Teammate Kris Draper recalled Fedorov’s remarkable talent, saying, “There were nights where Sergei could elevate his game and absolutely take it over.” His five-goal game against the Washington Capitals on December 26, 1996, remains one of the greatest in Red Wings history.
Current Red Wings player Patrick Kane noted Fedorov’s impact on the game, describing him as “flashy” and “entertaining,” with a skill level reminiscent of today’s stars like Connor McDavid.
As fans gather for the pregame ceremony, many former players are expected to attend, celebrating a player whose legacy continues to inspire. The ceremony will be broadcast live on FanDuel Sports Network, allowing fans nationwide to witness this historic moment.
This evening promises to be an emotional tribute, honoring a player whose journey from a young Russian talent to a Red Wings icon captures the heart of hockey history. Fans are encouraged to arrive early to witness the celebration and show their appreciation for Fedorov’s remarkable contributions to the game.
Stay tuned for further updates on this historic night for the Detroit Red Wings.
