Decoy Tesla Distracts Photographers as Musk Enters Courtroom

UPDATE: A dramatic scene unfolded outside a San Francisco courthouse on October 25, 2023, as a “decoy” Tesla diverted photographers’ attention while Elon Musk made a swift entrance for his trial related to Twitter’s stock price allegations. Witnesses reported that as the decoy vehicle arrived, Musk utilized the distraction to evade the media, illustrating the lengths he’s willing to go to manage his public image.

Photographers on the scene described the incident as a well-executed ruse. “100% a decoy. 100%,” remarked David Morris, a Bloomberg News photographer. As the Tesla pulled up, security quickly surrounded it, prompting photographers to converge, anticipating Musk’s exit. Instead, an SUV pulled up directly in front of the courthouse, allowing Musk and his security team to dash inside, leaving the photographers scrambling.

Musk is expected to testify in a federal case where former Twitter shareholders allege he violated securities laws in 2022, which they claim led to a significant drop in Twitter’s share price prior to his acquisition. Musk has consistently maintained that he complied with all legal requirements regarding his communications about the platform.

Cameraman Josh Edelson, working for Getty Images, expressed frustration at the scene, noting that Musk deliberately avoided eye contact with the media. “He didn’t look at us. It was just a profile shot,” Edelson said, indicating that Musk’s actions were clearly intended to complicate their efforts to capture a clear photograph.

The entire spectacle was captured by NBC journalist Scott Budman, who shared a video on social media, drawing attention to Musk’s strategic maneuvering. As soon as Musk entered the courthouse, the decoy Tesla, identified as a Model S, sped away, leaving no other occupants behind.

With the trial expected to continue, photographers are poised for another opportunity to capture Musk when he exits the courthouse. Morris confirmed that Bloomberg had assigned two photographers to cover each exit, emphasizing the ongoing challenge of capturing the elusive billionaire.

As this high-profile trial unfolds, the world watches closely. The outcome could have significant implications for Musk and his business dealings, particularly as he navigates accusations of misleading investors.

This developing story highlights the intricate relationship between media and high-profile figures, showcasing the lengths to which they will go to control their narratives. Stay tuned for more updates as the trial progresses, and photographers prepare for a possible second chance to capture Musk in action.
