UPDATE: The death toll from a devastating stampede at a political rally for popular Indian actor Vijay has tragically risen to 40, according to health officials in Tamil Nadu. The stampede occurred during a rally in Karur on Saturday, where tens of thousands had gathered to see the actor, who is also running for office in upcoming state elections.
As of this morning, at least 124 individuals have been treated for injuries, with many reported to be in stable condition. State Health Minister Ma Subramanian confirmed that 36 victims were declared dead upon arrival at hospitals, with four more succumbing to their injuries later. Among the deceased, nine were children, intensifying the tragedy of this incident.
The rally, held in sweltering heat, was marked by chaos as crowds swelled far beyond expected numbers. Witnesses reported that Vijay was delayed by over six hours before addressing the crowd, leading to overcrowding and mounting tensions. Local resident S. Sabesan described the scene: “A lot of barricades and ropes were placed around the venue, but the crowd became so large that nobody could control it.”
During the rally, Vijay attempted to alleviate the situation by distributing water bottles to fans. However, as he prepared to leave, chaos erupted when hundreds of supporters chased his vehicle, triggering the stampede. Eyewitness R. Rajendaran stated, “That is what led to the stampede.”
In response to the tragedy, Chief Minister M.K. Stalin announced compensation of over $11,000 for the families of the deceased. A government probe, led by a former judge, has also been initiated to investigate the circumstances surrounding the stampede, with a report expected within a month.
Vijay, who retired from acting in 2024 to launch his political party, Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam, expressed his devastation over the incident, stating, “My heart is shattered. I am writhing in unbearable, indescribable pain and sorrow that words cannot express.”
Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi described the incident as “deeply saddening,” highlighting the tragic nature of crowd-related accidents in India. Such incidents have been reported previously, including a stampede that claimed 30 lives during the Maha Kumbh festival earlier this year.
The rally’s aftermath has sparked widespread mourning and calls for greater safety measures at large gatherings. As the investigation unfolds, officials are urging for improved crowd management to prevent future tragedies.
