Danielle Shoykhet Makes History as Beachwood Council President

Danielle Shoykhet has etched her name in the history of Beachwood, Ohio, by becoming the first woman elected as City Council president. The unanimous decision by her colleagues occurred during a ceremonial meeting on January 5, 2025, which also saw Mayor Justin Berns sworn in for his second term by Judge Francine Goldberg of the Cuyahoga County Domestic Relations Court. Berns, who ran unopposed in the November elections, reflected on his decade-long journey in public service during the proceedings.

A number of officials took their oaths during the meeting, including Alec Isaacson, a former two-time council president, who was sworn in by his son, Noah. Other council members taking their oaths included Pete Smith and Alex Jacobs, who celebrated the beginning of her first term with a ceremony conducted by her husband, Paul. The council also elected Jillian DeLong as the new vice president, solidifying a leadership team marked by a commitment to collaboration and progress.

In her acceptance statement, Shoykhet expressed gratitude for the trust placed in her by her fellow council members. “I am truly honored to accept your nomination as the council president for the next two years,” she stated. She emphasized the importance of the relationships among council members, saying, “We do not always see every issue the same way, but our different perspectives make us stronger.”

Shoykhet acknowledged Isaacson’s contributions as council president, calling him an “extraordinary example of leadership.” Looking ahead, she outlined immediate goals for the council, including establishing committee leadership and prioritizing a legislative agenda to ensure clarity and purpose in their efforts.

“Thank you for trusting me with this honorable responsibility,” she concluded. “I care deeply about the Beachwood community and serving alongside all of you.”

The meeting was also attended by District 11 Cuyahoga County Councilwoman Sunny Simon, who remarked on the significant progress made in the diversity of Beachwood’s leadership. Reflecting on a time when the council was entirely male, Simon said, “I am so pleased today to see a diverse set of council people and leaders in the city of Beachwood. It makes me proud, it makes me happy.”

Currently, the Beachwood City Council is composed of five women, including Shoykhet, DeLong, June Taylor, Ali Stern, and Jacobs, while Isaacson and Smith represent the remaining male voices in the council.

Former Beachwood councilman and current Ohio District 21 State Representative Eric Synenberg also spoke at the meeting, highlighting the importance of local governance and community engagement.

Judge Goldberg, during her remarks, praised Mayor Berns for his leadership and accomplishments, such as the city’s $8 million purchase of the former Fairmount Temple property and the installation of an electronic reader board sign at city hall. She noted Berns’ skills in communication and collaboration, saying, “Your mental nimbleness, attention to detail, and ability to compromise enhance and benefit this great city.”

Berns is also preparing for the upcoming Dopey Challenge at Disney World in Florida, where he will participate in four races over four days, totaling 48.6 miles. This commitment reflects his dedication not only to his role as mayor but also to personal challenges.

Danielle Shoykhet’s election as Beachwood’s first female council president marks a significant milestone in the city’s governance, bringing a fresh perspective and renewed energy to local leadership. As the council moves forward, Shoykhet’s vision for fostering collaboration and prioritizing community needs is expected to guide their initiatives in the coming years.
