Cubs Trade Kittredge Back to Orioles for Cash, Rebuild Begins

UPDATE: The Chicago Cubs have officially traded right-handed reliever Andrew Kittredge back to the Baltimore Orioles for cash considerations, marking a significant move just announced on October 3, 2023. This trade comes as the Cubs begin to reshape their bullpen following a challenging season.

In his brief tenure with Chicago, Kittredge, aged 35, made an impact in 23 games during the regular season, posting a solid 3.38 ERA and securing 5 saves while stepping in for the injured reliever Daniel Palencia. He also made 5 appearances during the playoffs, showcasing his experience under pressure.

The Cubs originally acquired Kittredge from Baltimore at the trade deadline, sending a minor leaguer in return. However, with key pieces of their bullpen set to hit the free-agent market, including Drew Pomeranz, Caleb Thielbar, and Taylor Rogers, the team is now faced with a critical overhaul.

This trade is part of a broader strategy as the Cubs prepare for the offseason. Reports from ESPN’s Jesse Rogers indicate that the Cubs have also declined their contract options for starter Shota Imanaga, allowing him to enter free agency. As the offseason looms, fans and analysts alike are eager to see how the Cubs will navigate these changes and fill the gaps in their pitching staff.

The urgency of this news is heightened by the ongoing transition within the organization. The Cubs must act swiftly to solidify their roster and address the impending free agency of several key pitchers. With the offseason approaching, all eyes will be on Chicago as they work to rebuild and enhance their team for the upcoming season.

Stay tuned for more updates as this story develops.
