URGENT UPDATE: The Iowa High School Baseball Coaches Association has just announced the all-district honors, spotlighting two standout players from the Creston Panthers baseball team. Senior Parker Varner has earned a coveted spot on the first team as a pitcher, while sophomore Tom Mikkelsen has been recognized on the second team in the highly competitive Class 3A Southwest District.
This news comes as the local community rallies behind their young athletes, celebrating their achievements as the baseball season wraps up. Varner’s impressive season included a 6-2 record and a stellar 2.18 earned run average. Over the course of 61 innings, he notched an impressive 72 strikeouts while allowing only eight walks and 59 hits, leading to an opponent batting average of just .248 against him.
In addition to his pitching prowess, Varner showcased his versatility by playing third base and shortstop when not on the mound, boasting a remarkable batting average of .450 with 25 runs batted in—an outstanding performance that has resonated throughout the district.
Meanwhile, Mikkelsen, primarily a catcher, displayed commendable flexibility in his role by contributing as an outfielder and pitcher. With a batting average of .363, he hit three home runs and drove in 17 RBIs while being hit by pitches a staggering 17 times. His pitching stats include a 2-4 record and a 2.07 ERA, with 27 strikeouts in 23.2 innings.

The all-district teams featured numerous talented players from across the region. The first team included notable names such as Hayden Mohwinkle from Carlisle and Evan Mott, also from Carlisle, showcasing the depth of talent in the district.
