UPDATE: The Crenshaw Cougars are set to compete for the City Section Open Division title against top-seeded Carson at 6 p.m. on Saturday, November 25, 2023, despite facing a coaching crisis. Official head coach Robert Garrett has been barred from attending games since August 21, when he was placed on administrative leave by the Los Angeles Unified School District (LAUSD).
In his absence, long-time assistant and Crenshaw graduate Terrence Whitehead has stepped up as interim coach, leading the Cougars to an impressive 10-1 record. This remarkable turnaround has Crenshaw poised to capture its seventh City title, igniting excitement among fans and players alike.
Garrett, who boasts an astounding 300 career victories since 1988, is frustrated yet proud of his team’s success. “I think he’s doing an outstanding job from where he’s been put,” Garrett stated about Whitehead’s leadership. The Cougars aim to avenge last season’s heartbreak, where they lost by just one point in the opening round of the Division I playoffs.
The team’s roster includes standout linebacker De’Andre Kirkpatrick, a transfer from Animo Robinson, who Garrett praises as a “Division I player.” At 6 feet 3 inches and 225 pounds, Kirkpatrick exemplifies the talent and determination that has propelled the Cougars this season.
“You win ballgames from January through July when you meet daily and go over fundamentals,” Garrett shared, emphasizing the importance of hard work in training. “You win it in the weight room.”
Despite his ongoing administrative leave, Garrett continues to mentor Whitehead, speaking weekly and watching games streamed online. However, he has made it clear he will not attend Saturday’s championship game, opting instead to watch USC vs. UCLA from home. “I’m going to coach somewhere, somehow,” he declared, showcasing his unwavering passion despite the current turmoil.
The investigation surrounding Garrett has left many questions unanswered. He expressed frustration over the lack of clarity from LAUSD, stating, “I haven’t been told anything. They will find no wrongdoing whatsoever.” With investigations sometimes lasting over a year, Garrett remains hopeful for a swift resolution.
As Garrett continues to navigate this challenging time, he is also writing a book, sharing his journey from being the first in his family to graduate college to becoming a celebrated coach. “I’m not a coach, I’m an educator,” he reflected, underscoring his commitment to his players’ futures.
With the championship game just hours away, the Cougars are ready to fight for victory, embodying the spirit of resilience and determination. As Garrett puts it, “Win one for The G Man,” rallying support from the community and fans who recognize the impact of this season’s journey.
As the clock ticks down to kickoff, all eyes will be on Crenshaw as they aim to etch another victory in the annals of City Section history. Stay tuned for updates on this developing story!
