UPDATE: A couple has turned their dream of owning a vacation home in the Pacific Northwest into a reality, embracing an off-grid lifestyle against rising housing costs. Sally Marks and her partner, Carol, purchased a 4.6-acre lot on Washington’s Olympic Peninsula in 2022 for $160,000, following years of searching for affordable housing in the pricey region.
The couple fell in love with the area during a vacation in 2010. They envisioned a home near the charming city of Port Townsend, known for its kayaking, hiking, and vibrant arts community. However, skyrocketing real estate prices, often exceeding $500,000, dashed their hopes of a traditional second home.
In a twist of fate, their real estate agent discovered a wooded lot that fit their budget but required significant off-grid adjustments. The property lacked power and plumbing, with only an outhouse on-site. Nevertheless, it offered a developed road and reliable cell service, crucial for modern living.
With a focus on sustainability, they purchased a rugged 20-foot Airstream Basecamp for $65,000 to serve as their primary residence. The couple has adapted to off-grid living by utilizing portable solar panels, capturing rainwater, and hauling drinking water from a facility nearby.
They have created a comfortable outdoor space, including a tent for cooking and dining, and even a rehearsal space for Carol, who has joined a local band. The couple remains resourceful, using battery-operated tools and taking advantage of local marinas for kayaking and essential amenities.
Despite the challenges, including crowded living conditions in the Airstream, Marks expressed no regrets. “Living off the grid has been an interesting adventure, but we don’t regret our decision. The Pacific Northwest is now our home for three to five months a year, just like we dreamed,” she stated.
As they prepare to migrate back to their on-grid home in Arizona for the winter, the couple ensures their property is ready for the cold. This includes maintaining their riding lawn mower and preparing the land for winter months.
The couple’s journey highlights a growing trend among those priced out of traditional homeownership, showcasing the possibility of fulfilling dreams through unconventional means. As real estate prices continue to rise, their story serves as a beacon for others seeking affordable living options.
For those considering a similar path, the couple’s experience underscores the importance of community and sustainability in achieving a fulfilling lifestyle. Their off-grid adventure is a testament to resilience and adaptability, transforming their dream into a vibrant reality against all odds.
