The Council of the Southern Mountains in McDowell County, West Virginia, is providing free tax preparation services to the community as part of a longstanding initiative that began in 2007. This nonprofit organization aims to alleviate the financial burden of tax filing, helping individuals and families navigate an essential annual task without incurring costs.
Regina Sanders, a Community Service Advocate for the council, emphasized that the service is available to anyone who meets specific guidelines. To utilize the free tax preparation, individuals will need to present a valid phone number, identification, birthdates, and social security cards for all taxpayers. Additionally, necessary tax forms, including W-2s and 1099s, must be provided. For those wishing to receive a direct deposit, a bank statement or a voided check is also required.
Community Support and Accessibility
Sanders highlighted the significance of this service, stating, “It really helps people. Instead of going to other places where they have to pay, this is free and it saves them a great amount of money.” The council takes pride in being able to support the community through this annual tradition, which has been a staple for nearly two decades.
The tax preparation services are available at the council’s office, located at 21 Bank Street in Welch. Operating hours are Monday through Thursday, with additional services offered on Fridays at the Big Creek People in Action center in War. Appointments are also available on Saturdays.
For further inquiries, individuals can contact the council at (304) 436-6800. This initiative not only serves to lighten the financial load of tax preparation but also fosters a sense of community support, reinforcing the council’s commitment to assisting residents throughout McDowell County.
