UPDATE: Coastwise North Devon has just unveiled an exhilarating new spring program to celebrate its 20th anniversary, launching this Thursday, January 8. The series of engaging talks and activities aims to spotlight the rich marine life along the North Devon coast and the environmental challenges it faces.
The inaugural event kicks off at 10 AM at Barnstaple Library, featuring renowned underwater photographer and author Paul Naylor. His talk, “Dropping in on the lives of our amazing marine animals,” promises to captivate audiences with stories of unique species like the tompot blennies.
Coastwise Chair Liesje Birchenough emphasized the importance of this program, stating, “Paul’s talk will be a real treat. He is hugely popular and has long been a supporter of Coastwise.” The 10-week program will not only delve into North Devon’s stunning wildlife but also cover critical issues related to climate change and coastal management.
Additionally, the lineup includes a talk on January 22 by PhD student Elizabeth James, focusing on female shore crabs and their sensitivity to electromagnetic fields. Following that, members will share their “Shore Stories” with insights about local sites such as Greencliff and Combe Martin.
On January 29, Professor Richard Twitchett from the Natural History Museum will present “Reading the rock record: mass extinctions and climate change in Devon,” highlighting the region’s geological history.
As part of this exciting program, attendees can also participate in a bird-watching visit on February 26 at Horsey Marsh in Braunton, meeting at Velator Car Park at 10 AM.
Coastwise offers a membership of just £20 for access to all 10 sessions, or individuals can attend specific talks for £3 each. This program is a unique opportunity for the community to connect with the rich biodiversity of their coastline while engaging in citizen science and environmental advocacy.
For those fascinated by marine life and eager to learn more, Paula Ferris, a founding member, adds, “If you have ever been intrigued by a rock-pool, you should join us. Coastwise is the go-to place to find out about most things to do with our coast.”
