CNU Men’s Basketball Dominates Washington & Jefferson, Advances!

UPDATE: Christopher Newport University (CNU) men’s basketball team has just secured a commanding 90-61 victory over Washington & Jefferson College, propelling them into the next round of the NCAA Tournament. This decisive win, occurring on February 25, 2023, marks a triumphant return to form for the Captains, who suffered an early exit last season.

The Captains (23-5) are set to face Randolph-Macon next week, likely in Ashland, as they aim to rekindle their Sweet 16 legacy. This victory not only signifies a new chapter for CNU but also serves as a poignant reminder of last year’s disappointment. Senior player Collin Hines, who shined with 17 points, 10 rebounds, and 5 assists, expressed the emotional weight of the moment. “We know what happened last year, and we didn’t want that to happen again. It definitely motivated me,” Hines stated.

CNU’s performance was nothing short of dominant, with their 29-point margin being the largest in a second-round game since 2019. The Captains started strong, taking an early lead just 22 seconds into the game and consistently outpacing their opponents. A notable push came in the second half when Toa Hollenbeck scored seven points in a rapid 86-second stretch, helping to seal the game.

Despite facing a relentless full-court press from Washington & Jefferson, which forced 16 turnovers, CNU managed to capitalize with quick baskets. Head Coach John Krikorian praised Hines, saying, “He’s one of the most elite passers and playmakers we’ve ever had.” His leadership on the court was crucial to breaking through the opposing press.

The Captains dominated the boards, out-rebounding the Presidents 53-29, including a staggering 29-13 advantage in the second half alone. “That’s been a big emphasis for us in the tournament,” Hollenbeck noted, highlighting their increased efforts on rebounds that led to 23 second-chance points.

CNU’s ability to regroup after a brief scare in the first half—where Washington & Jefferson narrowed the score to 29-28—demonstrated their resilience. They closed the first half with a 14-4 run and started the second half with a powerful 17-3 run.

Looking ahead, the Captains are aware that the competition will only get tougher. Coach Krikorian emphasized the importance of maintaining their rebounding intensity as they progress in the tournament. “As you go further in this tournament, it gets harder and harder,” he remarked. CNU fans are eager to see if their team can continue this momentum and reclaim their place among the elite in NCAA basketball.

Stay tuned for more updates as CNU prepares for their upcoming clash against Randolph-Macon. This moment is a testament to their hard work and determination to rise above past challenges.
