URGENT UPDATE: Civil rights leader and former East Bay Municipal Utility District Director William “Bill” Patterson has died at the age of 94, announced officials shortly after his passing on October 24, 2023. Known as the “Conscience of the District,” Patterson’s impact on the community spans decades, making his loss felt across Oakland and beyond.
Patterson, who served as the first Black director at EBMUD for 27 years, was a champion for equity among the district’s 1.4 million customers. His tireless advocacy addressed critical public health issues, including lead contamination in schools, and promoted sustainability for the Mokelumne watershed.
EBMUD Board President Marguerite Young expressed profound sorrow, stating, “Bill Patterson was a devoted public servant whose exemplary leadership… enhanced our ability to serve our East Bay community.” Young emphasized Patterson’s integrity and collaborative spirit, which will be deeply missed by both colleagues and residents.
Beyond his role at EBMUD, Patterson was a pivotal figure in the Oakland community, serving as a three-term president of the Oakland NAACP. Current Ward 6 Director Valerie Lewis remarked, “Bill’s legacy is woven into the fabric of EBMUD and the East Bay,” highlighting his belief in informed decision-making and advocacy for the people.
Newly elected Oakland Mayor Barbara Lee also paid tribute to Patterson, calling him a “positive force in the lives of generations of Oakland youth.” Reflecting on their personal bond, Lee recalled, “When I was sworn in as Oakland’s Mayor at City Hall, it was Bill who held my grandfather’s Bible,” underscoring the deep connections Patterson fostered in the community.
Patterson’s passing comes as Oakland faces numerous challenges, yet his legacy as a mentor to influential figures like basketball legend Bill Russell and baseball icons Frank Robinson and Joe Morgan continues to inspire generations. Lee stated, “Even as our city faced tremendous challenges, Bill never stopped making this city better for all of us.”
As tributes pour in, the community reflects on the profound impact Patterson made. His commitment to justice and equity will resonate in the ongoing work of those he inspired.
Officials and community leaders will gather to honor Patterson’s legacy in the coming days, ensuring his vision for a more equitable East Bay continues to thrive.
