UPDATE: Citadel Theatre is set to premiere a gripping production of “Misery,” featuring real-life couple Scott Phelps and Ellen Phelps in the lead roles. This thrilling adaptation of Stephen King‘s novel, directed by Scott Westerman, runs from September 10 to October 12, 2023, in Lake Forest.
Westerman described the play as a “taut and precise” narrative that vividly captures the intense relationship between novelist Paul Sheldon and his fan, Annie Wilkes. The show promises to deliver a unique twist, as the Phelps couple brings their real-life dynamics to the stage. “It’s a cool opportunity to put the two of them onstage together,” said Westerman, emphasizing how their relationship will be exposed through their performances.
Scott Phelps, taking on the role of Paul Sheldon, expressed that he was “kind of talked into it” by his wife, who has been cast as the deranged fan Annie Wilkes. The couple, who last performed together in “The Christians” in 2023, has only shared the stage three times in their 41 years of marriage. “This show is a beast,” Scott acknowledged, noting the physical demands of the role.
Ellen, in her portrayal of Annie, shared her newfound compassion for the character, stating, “What people find fascinating is that I get to torture my husband onstage, and I can get away with it.” Their collaborative preparation includes taking long walks and rehearsing lines, showcasing their deep trust in each other as performers.
Performances will occur at 7:30 p.m. Thursdays through Saturdays, and 3 p.m. on Sundays, with special 1 p.m. matinees on September 17 and October 1. Tickets are priced at $22 for previews on October 10-11 and $48 for regular performances. Reservations are available by calling 847-735-8554, ext. 1 or visiting citadeltheatre.org.
This production not only highlights the talent of its actors but also delves into the psychological intricacies of fandom and artistry. As Scott Phelps articulated, “As artists, we all want our fans to be passionate about our work; Annie takes it to another level.”
With innovative staging and an intimate setting, Westerman believes this production will resonate deeply with audiences. “I’ve cracked the code,” he stated, hinting at surprises in the presentation.
