Chris Rock Urges Lorne Michaels to Retire After Eddie Murphy’s SNL Return

BREAKING: Chris Rock has disclosed that he urged SNL creator Lorne Michaels to retire immediately following Eddie Murphy’s highly anticipated return to the show in 2019. This revelation comes from the newly released Netflix documentary Being Eddie, which reflects on Murphy’s legendary impact on the iconic sketch comedy series.

In the documentary, Rock, alongside fellow comedians Tracy Morgan and Dave Chappelle, shared their excitement about joining Murphy during his monologue. Rock stated, “It was one of the greatest SNLs ever,” highlighting the monumental nature of the event that marked Murphy’s first appearance in 35 years.

Murphy, who starred on SNL from 1980 to 1984, played a pivotal role in revitalizing the show during its lowest ratings period. His last episode aired on February 25, 1984, and he did not return until 2019, largely due to a joke made by David Spade that had caused a rift.

In a surprising twist, Rock approached Michaels after the episode concluded and suggested, “You should quit right now. It’s not gonna get any better than this.” While Michaels did not take Rock’s advice, the moment underscores the impact of Murphy’s return, which has been described as one of the most significant in SNL history.

The documentary Being Eddie not only chronicles Murphy’s illustrious career but also details the behind-the-scenes dynamics that shaped his return. Streaming now on Netflix, it offers fans an insider’s look at the iconic comedian’s legendary status.

As SNL continues to evolve, Murphy’s return and the ensuing comments from Rock emphasize the show’s enduring legacy and the influence of its stars. With a mixture of nostalgia and humor, Being Eddie serves as a reminder of how pivotal moments in entertainment history can resonate through generations.

Stay tuned for more updates as we continue to follow the evolving narratives within the world of comedy and television.
