Chicago Chefs Unite for First-Ever Chuseok Celebration Monday

UPDATE: Chicago’s culinary scene is set to transform as local chefs unite to celebrate the inaugural Chuseok harvest festival on October 2, 2023. Award-winning chefs including Bill Kim, Andy Lim, and Chris Jung are bringing this cherished tradition to life in a sold-out event at Maxwells Trading, aiming to honor Korean heritage and create a vibrant community experience.

This three-day celebration, marked by family gatherings and remembrance of ancestors, is especially poignant for Korean Americans who have long felt disconnected from their cultural roots. Chuseok, often referred to as “Korean Thanksgiving,” begins this year under the full moon and is a time for communal feasting and honoring familial traditions.

Chef Andy Lim, executive chef at Perilla, expressed the emotional significance of the festival, stating, “The entire country will stop what it’s doing to get ready for Chuseok.” This year, the chefs aim to reintroduce these traditions, which many in the community have only heard about from their parents.

The sold-out gathering will accommodate 200 guests and features an array of traditional dishes, including songpyeon (sweet rice cakes), japchae (glass noodles stir-fried with vegetables), and jeon (savory pancakes). The chefs are eager to share these beloved recipes, some of which hold personal significance, with a new generation.

Jung, chef at Maxwells Trading, emphasized the rediscovery of heritage, saying, “For us, it’s almost like we’re rediscovering our heritage.” Alongside culinary offerings, innovative cocktails such as a boozy version of hwachae (fruit punch) will also be featured, bridging traditional flavors with contemporary twists.

The event is a response to the growing global interest in Korean culture, driven by factors such as K-pop and the proliferation of Korean cuisine. Lim noted, “It’s a shock to my parents to see how big the influence of Korea has become globally.” This resurgence in cultural pride reflects a bittersweet journey for many in the community, who once felt marginalized.

As the chefs prepare for this landmark occasion, they share a collective vision to foster a stronger Korean community in Chicago. Lim shared, “We wanted to go to our parents and say ‘Hey, come see what we’ve done. Come see that we created this event so you can celebrate again.’”

The gathering symbolizes a pivotal moment for Korean American chefs and their heritage, showcasing the influence of pioneers like Bill Kim, who has laid the groundwork for future generations. Although Kim will be unable to attend, his impact resonates throughout the event, bringing together chefs who are proud to share their culture and culinary traditions.

This Chuseok celebration not only highlights the rich tapestry of Korean cuisine but also serves as a reminder of the importance of community, family, and shared history. As the chefs look to the future, they hope this event will catalyze ongoing engagement with Korean traditions, fostering a deeper understanding and appreciation of their heritage within the broader Chicago community.
