Chef César Murillo Transforms North Pond into Culinary Gem

UPDATE: North Pond, the iconic Chicago restaurant nestled in Lincoln Park, has undergone a remarkable transformation under executive chef César Murillo, who has injected new confidence and creativity into the menu. Just announced, Murillo’s innovative culinary style is capturing attention, especially following his appearance on the reality show “Top Chef” this year.

The restaurant, which has been a staple since 1998, is now offering a menu that reflects Murillo’s unique experiences and rich heritage. “If I had to pick one word to describe North Pond now, it would just be magical,” Murillo stated during a recent visit on September 10, 2025. The restaurant owner, Richard Mott, has embraced this evolution, commissioning architect Nancy Warren to craft a space that enhances the dining experience.

Murillo’s journey from a humble background in Chihuahua City, Mexico, to the forefront of the Chicago culinary scene is compelling. He was brought to the U.S. on a visitor visa at just four years old and faced significant challenges growing up. “I didn’t grow up eating a lot of good food,” he recalled, reflecting on his childhood. Yet this adversity has shaped his culinary perspective, allowing him to experience flavors anew as an adult.

The revamped menu features an exquisite brunch option at $59 and a decadent dinner tasting experience priced at $134. Guests can expect a creative blend of flavors, including dishes like chilled melon soup with crab salad and a stunning heirloom corn quesadilla topped with vibrant garden petals.

Murillo emphasizes collaboration within his kitchen, mentoring his team to foster creativity. This approach is evident in standout dishes like the seared scallop on buckwheat crepe, created in part by chef de cuisine John Brandon, and a wagyu strip loin dish attributed to cook Zoe Thatcher.

Among the highlights, the Lillet Pad cocktail has become a fan favorite, featuring a delicate nasturtium leaf lily pad garnished with a tiny droplet of glucose water. The drink reflects Murillo’s commitment to a balanced, imaginative dining experience.

As North Pond continues to evolve, it remains committed to delivering quality and creativity. The restaurant is open for dinner Thursday to Sunday, and brunch on Sundays, welcoming guests to enjoy the lush views of the park and pond.

Next steps: For those seeking a unique dining experience in Chicago, Murillo’s North Pond is a must-visit. Reservations are highly encouraged due to the growing popularity, and diners can expect an unforgettable culinary journey that celebrates both the land and the chef’s heritage.
