BREAKING: CEASE, a prominent anti-smoking organization, is launching an urgent campaign to eliminate smoking exemptions in casinos across Kansas and Missouri. As of early 2024, the group is rallying support for key legislative measures aimed at protecting casino workers from harmful second-hand smoke.
The organization is backing House Bill 2252 and Senate Bill 176 in Kansas, which explicitly call for smoke-free gaming areas. In parallel, similar measures are being introduced in Missouri with HB 1901 and HB 1618 already pre-filed. “This is a critical moment for casino workers in both states,” declared Joseph Hafley, founder of CEASE. “Now is the time to strengthen protections and close the loophole that currently puts workers at risk.”
The initiative comes as both states seek to modernize workplace safety standards. CEASE is mobilizing local branches to garner public support and engage lawmakers, emphasizing the health risks faced by thousands of workers exposed daily to second-hand smoke in casinos.
Despite claims from opponents that a smoking ban could harm casino revenue, CEASE argues that the health of workers should take precedence. The organization highlights that exposure to second-hand smoke can lead to severe health issues, including respiratory diseases and cancer.
As lawmakers in both states deliberate, the tension is palpable. Many officials express concerns about potential backlash from the gambling industry, fearing job losses and economic downturns if smoking is banned entirely. However, the mounting evidence of health risks associated with second-hand smoke may push legislators to reconsider.
In Pennsylvania, similar efforts to implement a smoking ban in casinos are also underway, but progress has stalled as lawmakers hesitate to take a definitive stance.
With public awareness rising and support growing, CEASE is determined to keep this issue at the forefront. “Kansas and Missouri have a unique opportunity to lead by example and prioritize worker safety,” Hafley added.
As discussions continue, both supporters and opponents of the smoking ban are closely watching the legislative process. The outcome could have significant implications for casino workers and the gaming industry in the region.
