UPDATE: Carson Melendy has made headlines again, securing second place at the Sierra Nevada Classic (SNC) held at the Reno Events Center on February 5-6, 2024. This impressive finish showcases Melendy’s tenacity as he cements his status as one of the region’s top wrestlers.
In a strong performance at 165 pounds, Melendy recorded a remarkable 5-1 record during the two-day tournament. His journey to the finals included dominating victories, with multiple pins and a technical fall, before narrowly losing to Junipero Serra’s Sebastian Garcia in the championship match. His efforts contributed to Fallon’s overall finish of 19th out of 92 teams, a notable achievement for a team still finding its rhythm this season.
Just days later, Melendy competed at the prestigious Rollie Lane Invitational in Nampa, Idaho, where he again claimed second place. His performance included a series of hard-fought decisions, culminating in a 9-8 loss in the finals. The back-to-back strong finishes come after Melendy’s recent recovery from illness, which kept him from competing in significant matches earlier this season.
Melendy’s drive for excellence is clear as he aims for his fourth state title in his final season. Following this weekend’s tournaments, Fallon hosted Fernley for a dual meet on February 7 and gears up for the Steave Deaton Memorial in Minden this weekend.
The Greenwave wrestling team had several standout performances at the SNC. Wyatt Lambert (157 pounds) and Manuel Barros (113 pounds) both finished with 3-2 records, demonstrating resilience despite facing tough competition. Additionally, Braylon Byrd and Andre Green each achieved 3-2 records in their respective weight classes, with Byrd notching two pins along the way.
As for the girls’ team, the Lady Wave faced challenges at the SNC but rebounded strongly at the Sparks Invitational, with Peyton Heckman (145 pounds) capturing first place. Saraphine Luna (105 pounds) and Tabitha Brockelsby (145 pounds) followed closely, both finishing second in their weight classes.
With the next competition on the horizon, all eyes will be on Melendy and the Greenwave team as they continue to push forward in their quest for state titles. Keep an eye on this talented team as they prepare for upcoming matches—this season is shaping up to be one for the books!
