UPDATE: A devastating gas explosion at a New York City apartment building has left 1 person dead and 14 others injured, officials confirmed early Saturday morning. The blast occurred at a 17-story building on Bivona Street in the Bronx’s Eastchester neighborhood, prompting urgent evacuations for approximately 150 homes nearby.
Emergency crews responded quickly to the scene after residents reported a strong smell of gas permeating the upper floors. While investigating, another explosion erupted on the 15th and 16th floors, igniting multiple fires and briefly trapping firefighters in an elevator.
“This is a very, very dangerous operation for our firefighters who performed incredibly on those upper floors, searching and protecting civilian life,” stated FDNY Chief of Department John Esposito in a press briefing.
New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani took to social media, sharing images from a reception center established for affected residents. He emphasized that city agencies are collaborating with the Red Cross to assist those displaced, with ongoing searches, inspections, and efforts to restore utility services.
The explosion has raised significant concerns about safety and preparedness in residential areas. Local authorities continue to assess the situation and provide support to those impacted.
As investigations proceed, officials warn that the area remains hazardous. Residents are urged to stay clear and follow safety guidelines.
