UPDATE: U.S. speedskater Brittany Bowe has concluded her Olympic journey in the women’s 1,500-meter event, finishing in fourth place with a time of 1:54.70 at the Milan Cortina Games on February 9, 2024.
Bowe, a two-time bronze medalist and 37 years old, confirmed that this would be her last Olympic appearance. Despite a strong effort, she fell just short of the podium, with the gold medal going to the Netherlands’ Antoinette Rijpma-De Jong, who clocked in at 1:54.09. Bowe was only 0.61 seconds away from a medal.
The silver medal was claimed by Norway’s Ragne Wiklund, while Canada’s Valerie Maltais secured bronze. Bowe’s teammate, Greta Myers, finished in 29th place with a time of 1:59.81.
“I’ve been pretty at peace with myself throughout this whole year, knowing it will be my last Olympic Games,” Bowe stated after the race, expressing her contentment with ending her career on her own terms.
Earlier in the Games, Bowe also competed in the 1,000m and team pursuit events, finishing fourth in both. The emotional weight of this final competition is palpable, as Bowe leaves behind a legacy as a fierce competitor in speedskating.
Going into the race, Japanese star Miho Takagi was a favorite, having previously set the world record in this distance. Takagi has now amassed 10 Olympic medals, including three bronze medals in Milan prior to this race.
Bowe’s poignant farewell comes just days after she announced her engagement to U.S. women’s hockey captain Hilary Knight, adding a personal milestone to her emotional Olympic farewell.
As the Games continue, all eyes will be on the remaining events and competitors, with Bowe’s legacy as a trailblazer in speedskating forever etched in Olympic history.
