UPDATE: The Bridgeport Islanders surged past the Springfield Thunderbirds with a commanding 6-1 victory on October 28, 2023, at Total Mortgage Arena. This decisive win marks a significant turning point for the Isles as they improve to a record of 5-6-1-0, while the Thunderbirds slump to 1-8-1-1.
In a game highlighted by a fierce second period, Bridgeport’s offense exploded, leaving Springfield struggling to keep pace. Will Cranley, making his first start of the season for the Thunderbirds, faced intense pressure, racking up 14 saves in the opening period alone. Despite his valiant efforts, Cranley’s defense faltered as the Islanders found their rhythm early in the second period.
At just 1:26 into the second, Alex Jefferies opened the scoring for Bridgeport, placing a precise shot over Cranley’s shoulder to take a 1-0 lead. The Islanders quickly doubled their advantage, with Eetu Liukas tipping in a pass from Daylan Kuefler just 2:10 later, pushing the score to 2-0.
The Thunderbirds attempted to regroup, but the Islanders continued to dominate, as Adam Beckman extended the lead to 3-0 at 9:02 with a deflection off a cross-ice pass from Matt Maggio. Springfield’s only response came from rookie Juraj Pekarcik, who scored on the power play at 15:32, cutting the deficit to 3-1 before the third period.
The final frame saw the Thunderbirds desperately trying to close the gap, but Bridgeport’s defense, led by Marcus Hogberg, remained resilient. Joey Larson, who had previously scored thrice in earlier matchups against Springfield, netted a goal at 13:39. The onslaught continued with two quick goals from Chris Terry and Marc Gatcomb within 23 seconds, sealing the Thunderbirds’ fate.
The Thunderbirds now face a quick turnaround as they prepare for their annual School Day Game against the Laval Rocket on Wednesday, November 1, 2023, at 10:35 a.m. at the MassMutual Center. Fans will be eager to see if Springfield can bounce back from this significant defeat and find their footing in the league.
