UPDATE: Milwaukee Brewers closer Trevor Megill is eyeing a return to the mound this Sunday as he prepares for the upcoming playoffs. After a month-long absence due to a right flexor strain, Megill expressed confidence in his readiness, stating he could see action in the team’s regular-season finale against the Cincinnati Reds on September 24, 2023.
Megill, who boasts an impressive record of 5-3 with 30 saves and a 2.54 ERA this season, emphasized the importance of this potential outing. “Some type of activity in tomorrow’s game is what’s been discussed,” he said. “I expect to see a batter or so in the game tomorrow. Just get my feet wet and feel what it feels like to be out there again and get ready for the playoffs.”
The Brewers, fresh off clinching the NL Central title, are eager to activate Megill from the injured list. His participation on Sunday will hinge on the results of his recent simulated game, where he reported positive progress. Manager Pat Murphy noted that while it is not essential for Megill to pitch Sunday to secure a spot on the Division Series roster, it would certainly aid in his preparation.
“It will help him, and it’ll keep us from making that decision in more simulated-type situations during the next week,” Murphy explained, highlighting the need for a live-game assessment.
In addition to Megill, left-handed starter Jose Quintana is also on the mend. Having last pitched on September 14 due to a left calf strain, Quintana is expected to be ready for postseason play, further bolstering the Brewers’ pitching staff.
Megill’s last appearance on the mound was on August 24, where he struggled, blowing saves in three of his last four outings prior to his injury. However, his confidence is evident as he looks ahead: “I definitely see myself being active,” Megill stated. “It’s up to them obviously, but I feel like we’re in a good spot.”
This potential return is crucial for the Brewers as they aim for success in the playoffs. Fans are eagerly awaiting the outcome of Sunday’s game, which could set the tone for their postseason journey. Stay tuned for updates as the Brewers finalize their roster decisions and prepare for the challenge ahead.
