UPDATE: Heroic act by Ahmed Al-Ahmed recognized at a gala in New York City on Wednesday night, where he downplayed his bravery following a horrific terrorist attack during a Hanukkah celebration in Australia last month. Al-Ahmed, a 43-year-old Syrian refugee, tackled an armed gunman, saving lives despite being shot five times.

At the event hosted by the Colel Chabad, the oldest charity in Israel, Al-Ahmed emphasized his actions were simply a “duty as a human being.” He said, “I do my duty. I’m helping and saving … It felt like my duty as a human being. Helping, keeping people safe.” His selflessness came during the attack on December 14 at Bondi Beach, where a father-son terrorist duo opened fire, killing at least 15 people and injuring over 40 others.

Al-Ahmed, who still wore a sling from his injuries, shared his emotional journey since the attack. “I’m looking at the world from the side of peace,” he remarked. His bravery was met with a standing ovation at the gala, organized to honor those affected by the tragedy. Rabbi Yehoram Ulman, of the Chabad of Bondi and father-in-law of a victim, addressed the crowd, recounting the day of the attack and the deep pain it inflicted on the community.

“The darkness will not win, will not lessen our holy work,” Ulman stated, highlighting the resilience of the community. Al-Ahmed expressed pride when referred to as a hero, noting the significant impact of his actions. “I gave him a big hug. He’s a big hero for me,” said Talia Kastiel-Katz, who traveled from San Diego to support the community after losing friends in the attack.

Now in New York, Al-Ahmed visited the Ohel Chabad Lubavitch in Queens, paying respects at the gravesite of Rabbi Menachem M. Schneerson. His emotional journey continues as he faces recovery, stating, “Honestly, there’s a pain. You know, my fingers stopped. They’re not working, but it’ll be all right … I need time, you know, one, two months, that’s what the doctor says.”

The gala attendees expressed immense gratitude for Al-Ahmed’s courage, reinforcing the community’s commitment to healing and remembrance. This urgent recognition of heroism comes at a pivotal moment, as the impact of the tragedy resonates widely.

As the world watches, Al-Ahmed’s story serves as a reminder of the strength found in humanity, even in the face of profound evil. The community continues to rally together, united in their sorrow and resilience.
