URGENT UPDATE: The body of a 26-year-old man who tragically drowned has been recovered from Becket Quarry in Berkshire County on Saturday morning, September 16, 2023. This devastating incident unfolded as the victim attempted to swim across the quarry with a companion shortly before 5:30 p.m. on Friday.
According to officials from the Southwick Police Department, the man began to struggle and swiftly submerged beneath the water. Witnesses onshore, including the woman he was swimming with, attempted to rescue him but were unable to reach him in time.
The Berkshire County Dive Team was mobilized, utilizing a submersible drone to search the waters. However, due to a malfunction and diminishing visibility as night fell, the team decided to halt operations and resume their search on Saturday morning. The drone played a crucial role in locating the victim’s body at approximately 11 a.m. on Saturday.
While the man has not yet been identified, authorities expressed their condolences. “We wish to extend our sincere condolences to the family of the victim and our appreciation to all public safety personnel who assisted in this incident,” stated the Southwick Police Department.
In light of this tragic event, District Attorney Timothy J. Shugrue issued a stark warning regarding water safety. “Based on statements from individuals who witnessed the drowning, the victim went under the water in a matter of seconds,” he said. He emphasized the urgent need for swimmers to respect the hazards that water presents, particularly during the ongoing hot weather. “It is critical for all residents to practice safety and vigilance while swimming in lakes, rivers, and pools. Even strong swimmers must take safety precautions in the water,” Shugrue added.
