UPDATE: Boca Raton mayoral candidate Mike Liebelson has issued a bold statement against two key ballot measures that could significantly impact the city. In a recent interview, Liebelson criticized existing city council decisions, stating that Boca Raton is on the wrong track due to unchecked development and rising taxes that threaten residents’ quality of life.
Liebelson emphasized his commitment to public safety, declaring that he will vote NO on ballot question No. 1, which allocates $120 million for police headquarters and public safety improvements. He expressed concern over the city’s financial oversight, stating, “I have no faith that our existing city commission can manage this large project.” He noted that residents have already experienced a staggering 70% increase in property tax revenues over the past five years, funds that he claims have been mismanaged.
In addition, Liebelson plans to vote NO on ballot question No. 2, which proposes leasing downtown land for public improvements. “This is a public land giveaway,” he stated, highlighting the significant financial implications for residents. “We are giving up land valued at $200 million while funding another $200 million for public improvements.”
Liebelson criticized the city council for promoting a misleading narrative about the deal, pointing out that the promised benefits would not materialize until after year 30 of the 99-year lease. He argues that the projected future gains, worth only $100 million when calculated to present value, do not justify the immediate financial burden on residents.
The candidate further expressed dissatisfaction with the ballot language approved by the city council, which he believes fails to accurately convey the financial responsibilities and consequences of these propositions.
As the Florida Legislature considers proposals to reduce or eliminate property taxes, Liebelson reinforced his stance that current taxes are excessively high. He advocated for a reduction in wasteful spending, asserting that he would not support selling public lands to compensate for lost tax revenues, unlike the current city council.
What sets Liebelson apart from his opponents is his refusal to accept campaign contributions from developers, a stance he claims is vital for maintaining integrity in the face of rampant development. “My opponents have raked in over $500,000 from big developers,” he remarked, accusing them of prioritizing financial gain over community welfare.
Liebelson’s extensive background includes an MBA in Finance from the Wharton School and a Bachelor of Sciences in Chemical Engineering from the University of California at Berkeley. His professional experience spans leadership roles in major companies, underscoring his ability to manage complex projects effectively.
With the election fast approaching, residents of Boca Raton are urged to consider Liebelson’s proposals carefully. His positions on these critical ballot measures will shape the future development and financial landscape of the city.
Stay tuned as we monitor this developing story and the upcoming election that could redefine Boca Raton’s direction.
