UPDATE: Indie folk-rock band Big Thief has just announced the release of their highly anticipated sixth studio album, Double Infinity, arriving on September 27, 2024. This marks a transformative period for the band, following the departure of original bassist Max Oleartchik in early 2024 due to “interpersonal reasons.”
The remaining trio—comprised of guitarist Buck Meek, singer-guitarist Adrianne Lenker, and drummer James Krivchenia—gathered in New England to start crafting this album, but initially felt stifled in their creative process. “Being in a vacuum, just the three of us, felt like a bit of an echo chamber,” Meek explained.
To overcome this creative hurdle, the band relocated to New York City, where they formed in 2015. There, they invited a host of musicians to join them, enriching their sound with layered arrangements that incorporate jazz influences and electronic elements, stepping away from their earlier, sparser Americana roots. “We decided to put together a big band and shake it up,” Meek stated, emphasizing the importance of collaboration in shaping the new album.
Big Thief will debut Double Infinity at the Hollywood Bowl on September 27, where they will headline for the first time. Alternative hip-hop artist Noname is set to open the show. The concert is expected to draw significant crowds, with ticket prices ranging from $29-$170.
This new direction comes at a pivotal moment for Big Thief, as they adapt to changes in their lineup while still resonating with their audience. “The album isn’t really released until we’re on stage,” Meek shared, indicating the band’s commitment to live performance as a means of connecting with fans.
In an exclusive interview, Meek discussed the album’s development process, revealing that the trio aimed to write collaboratively. “We met up for a month and just wrote every day,” he said, highlighting how songs like “Los Angeles” and “Grandmother” were born from their shared experiences.
The band’s evolution is reflected in their sound, as they embrace a more complex musical landscape. “Playing with 10 people encouraged everyone to play less than they would if it was just four,” Meek explained, emphasizing the richness of their new arrangements.
As excitement builds for the upcoming headline show, Big Thief is poised to captivate audiences with a fresh sound that promises to push boundaries. Fans are encouraged to stay tuned for updates leading up to the Hollywood Bowl performance, as the band prepares to make this event a landmark occasion in their career.
