Bald Eagle Drops Cat Through Windshield in NC Highway Incident

URGENT UPDATE: A shocking incident unfolded in Swain County, North Carolina this morning when a driver reported that a bald eagle dropped a cat through her windshield while she was traveling on U.S. Route 74. The event occurred at approximately 8:15 a.m. and has left both the driver and local authorities stunned.

According to the North Carolina Highway Patrol, the driver miraculously escaped injury despite the dramatic nature of the accident. The windshield of her vehicle was left with a massive hole, as confirmed by a photo shared by officials. The driver, who has not been named, recounted her harrowing experience during a 911 call obtained by WLOS-TV.

In the call, she stated, “OK, you may not believe me, but I just had a bald eagle drop a cat through my windshield. It absolutely shattered my windshield.” The driver was not alone in her disbelief; she mentioned a witness who exclaimed, “That is the craziest thing I’ve ever seen.”

Tragically, the cat did not survive the fall, highlighting the unexpected and bizarre nature of the incident. Bald eagles, known for their impressive size, can stand up to 3 feet tall with wingspans exceeding 8 feet. They typically weigh between 8 to 14 pounds and can carry objects weighing between 3 to 5 pounds. While it is uncommon for eagles to prey on domestic cats, which average about 2 feet in length and can weigh between 5 to 20 pounds, the incident raises questions about wildlife interactions near roadways.

This is not the first unusual event of its kind in North Carolina. In 2019, a similar incident occurred when a catfish crashed through a woman’s windshield, reportedly dropped by a flying bird.

Authorities are investigating the circumstances surrounding today’s event, although further details have yet to be released. The incident serves as a reminder of the unpredictable interactions between wildlife and human environments, especially in areas where animals may venture close to roadways.

As officials gather more information, residents are urged to stay vigilant while driving in areas known for wildlife activity. This bizarre occurrence is already capturing attention on social media, with many expressing disbelief and curiosity about how such an event could happen.
