URGENT UPDATE: A driver in North Carolina experienced a shocking incident when a bald eagle reportedly dropped a cat carcass through her windshield on the morning of November 19, 2025. The unusual event occurred on U.S. Route 74 in Swain County, close to Bryson City, approximately 65 miles southwest of Asheville.
The driver, who called 911, described the bizarre moment, saying, “You may not believe me, but I just had a bald eagle drop a cat through my windshield.” The impact shattered her windshield, leaving her understandably shocked.
The dispatcher, maintaining her composure, replied, “Okay. I do believe you, honestly,” before sharing a laugh with the driver about the extraordinary situation. Another witness also confirmed seeing the cat fall, adding to the surreal nature of the incident.
Authorities are investigating the matter, and the Highway Patrol has been dispatched to the scene. The dispatcher asked if the cat was alive, to which the driver confirmed it was not, and that it was on the side of the road rather than inside her vehicle.
Experts from the North Carolina Wildlife Resources Commission have weighed in on the incident. Kendrick Weeks explained that while bald eagles can carry prey the size of a cat, it is significantly more challenging for them to capture a live cat compared to scavenging one that is already dead. “Scavenging is a common behavior in bald eagles,” he noted.
Weeks elaborated on the reasons eagles might drop their prey, mentioning that they may lose grip if the animal is struggling or if they face harassment from other birds. He added that while some raptors might drop prey intentionally to kill it, this behavior is not typical for bald eagles.
This incident not only highlights the intriguing behaviors of wildlife but also serves as a reminder of the unpredictable nature of animal interactions. As authorities continue to investigate, local residents are likely to be on high alert and sharing their own sightings of wildlife in the area.
