BREAKING: An avalanche struck a group of 15 skiers on a backcountry trip near Frog Lake in California’s Sierra Nevada mountains, leaving 9 individuals missing as of this morning. The group was participating in a three-day trek organized by Blackbird Mountain Guides when the avalanche hit on January 16, 2024.
Emergency responders have successfully rescued 6 skiers, who sheltered in place for hours as blizzard conditions hampered rescue efforts. The group, which included four guides, was returning to the trailhead when disaster struck. Blackbird Mountain Guides confirmed they are coordinating with authorities to locate the remaining skiers.
The avalanche occurred amid a severe winter storm that has blanketed the region with snow. The town of Soda Springs recorded an astonishing 30 inches of snow within a 24-hour period. The Sierra Avalanche Center had issued an avalanche warning for the Greater Lake Tahoe region, predicting large slides due to rapidly accumulating snow on a fragile snowpack.
Blackbird Mountain Guides advertises their trips as tailored for intermediate-to-expert skiers, emphasizing the need for proper avalanche equipment including a beacon, shovel, and probe. Participants are also required to possess solid backcountry skills, as conditions can be treacherous.
The backcountry huts where skiers were staying are equipped with basic accommodations, including sleeping pads and gas stoves. These facilities were opened by the Truckee Donner Land Trust after being closed to the public for a century.
As search and rescue operations continue, authorities remain on high alert for further avalanches. The situation is developing rapidly, and updates will follow as more information becomes available.
The emotional toll on the families of the missing skiers is immeasurable, as they await news of their loved ones. Blackbird Mountain Guides has expressed their deepest concerns and commitment to supporting rescue efforts.
Stay tuned for more updates on this urgent situation as rescue teams work tirelessly to locate the remaining skiers.
