Aroldis Chapman Declares He’d Rather Retire Than Rejoin Yankees

URGENT UPDATE: Aroldis Chapman has made headlines with a stunning declaration, stating he would “retire on the spot” rather than ever play for the New York Yankees again. In a candid interview on the “Swing Completo” podcast, the hard-throwing left-hander, who recently enjoyed a resurgent season as the closer for the Boston Red Sox, expressed his disdain for the Yankees, where he played from 2016 to 2022.

Chapman, now 37, did not hold back when asked about the possibility of rejoining the Yankees, emphatically stating, “No way, not even dead.” He continued, “If I were told that I was being traded to New York, I’d pack my things and go home. I’ll retire right on the spot if that happens. I’m not crazy. Never again.” His comments underscore a deep-seated frustration with the organization.

This explosive statement comes after a tumultuous final season with the Yankees in 2022. Chapman faced significant challenges, including being removed from the closer role, suffering a leg infection from a tattoo, and skipping a mandatory workout, which ultimately led to him being left off the postseason roster.

Chapman reflected on his experience, sharing, “I dealt with a lot of disrespect [with the Yankees]. I put up with a lot of things. I knew they just wanted to find a way to get rid of me, but they didn’t know how.” He clarified that his issues were with the Yankees’ management rather than his teammates, saying, “I got along well with all the players. Never had a problem with anybody, even the manager.”

After leaving the Yankees, Chapman signed with the Kansas City Royals in January 2023 and later split the season between the Royals and the Texas Rangers. In 2024, he joined the Pittsburgh Pirates, where he posted a 3.79 ERA and secured 14 saves while taking on various roles in the bullpen.

Chapman’s comeback was solidified this season with the Red Sox, where he recorded 32 saves and achieved a career-best 1.17 ERA and 0.70 WHIP. His remarkable performance earned him a $13.3 million contract for 2026, which includes a vesting option for 2027.

As Chapman continues to thrive with the Red Sox, his comments about the Yankees are sending ripples through the baseball community. Fans and analysts alike are reacting to his strong stance, which could have lasting implications for his legacy and the Yankees’ image.

What’s next for Chapman? His future with the Red Sox looks bright, and fans will be watching closely to see how he builds on this successful season. Meanwhile, the Yankees face increasing scrutiny as they attempt to rebuild their roster amid ongoing challenges in the competitive MLB landscape.
