UPDATE: In a thrilling matchup, Oak Forest’s Andrew Dawson delivered a standout performance, leading his team to a 34-20 victory over Peoria in the Class 5A state quarterfinals. This urgent win marks Oak Forest’s first state semifinal appearance since 2007.
Dawson, a dynamic senior receiver, caught a crucial go-ahead touchdown pass and recovered an onside kick, showcasing his all-around skills. “Everything he does, he wants to win,” said Coach Zac Sadek. “He’s the most competitively driven kid I’ve seen.”
The Bengals, now with an impressive 11-1 record, will face Providence (9-3) this Saturday at 1 p.m. in New Lenox. Dawson, standing at 6-foot-2 and weighing 190 pounds, has made significant contributions throughout the season, including 14 receptions for 316 yards and eight touchdowns.
As an all-purpose standout, Dawson also excels defensively with 54 tackles, six interceptions, and three defensive touchdowns. His relentless drive and competitive spirit have been vital to the Bengals’ success.
“Dawson’s work ethic is unmatched,” his teammate and close friend, senior quarterback Daniel Chopp, stated. “We have a great energy and dynamic. I always trust him to be his own person.”
Growing up in a sports-centric family, Dawson credits his older brother, Joshua, a former quarterback and pitcher, with shaping his competitive nature. “He’d pull the blankets off me and tell me I had to get to work,” Dawson recalled.
Dawson is also set to return to basketball this winter as a small forward after taking a year off to focus on baseball. As Oak Forest prepares for a chance at the state championship, Dawson remains committed to giving his all. “We’re going in with the will to win,” he declared. “I’ll do anything for this team and this program.”
With the state semifinal just days away, all eyes will be on Dawson and Oak Forest as they aim for glory. Fans eagerly anticipate what this rising star will achieve next.
