URGENT UPDATE: A tragic incident has claimed the lives of an American father and son after they were attacked by a swarm of murder hornets while ziplining in Laos. Daniel Owen, the 46-year-old director of QSI International School of Haiphong, and his 15-year-old son, Cooper Owen, were fatally stung on October 15, 2023, during a family vacation at Green Jungle Park, located near Luang Prabang.
Local officials confirmed that the Owens were ziplining when they were suddenly overwhelmed by hundreds of Asian giant hornets. Both were stung over 100 times and were rushed to the Phakan Arocavet Clinic for immediate medical attention, but unfortunately succumbed to their injuries shortly after arrival.
A spokesperson for the U.S. Department of State confirmed the deaths of two American citizens in Luang Prabang, emphasizing the family’s privacy during this devastating time. “We have no further comment,” the spokesperson stated, respecting the family’s grief.
The Owens had been enjoying their holiday when the horrifying attack occurred. Daniel Owen was known for his dedication to education, having spent 18 years at QSI International School, making a significant impact on countless students and staff. A heartfelt message from the school community expressed their deep sorrow: “Dan dedicated 18 years to QSI, serving in five different schools and touching countless lives with his warmth, leadership, and unwavering commitment to education. He was deeply loved across our community and will be profoundly missed.”
