URGENT UPDATE: Thoroughbred owners in Alabama are taking decisive steps to bring horse racing back to the state after a staggering 30 years without live races. As the Magic City Classic Stakes kicks off this Friday at the New Orleans Fairgrounds Race Course, Alabama’s equestrian community is rallying to revive the sport that once drew more than 13,000 visitors on its opening day in 1987.
The Birmingham Race Course has not hosted a thoroughbred race since 1995, but leaders from the Alabama Horsemen’s Benevolent and Protective Association are optimistic about the future. President David Harrington emphasized the potential economic benefits, stating, “We’re hoping to eventually return live thoroughbred racing to Alabama. We have the infrastructure to do so, and many parts of Alabama’s agricultural industry would benefit. Thoroughbred racing will add thousands of jobs and boost Alabama’s economy.”
The Birmingham Race Course was originally built for $85 million and featured a grandstand with 5,200 seats, but financial struggles led to its closure after just 175 days of operation. Despite this history, the Alabama Horsemen’s Benevolent and Protective Association believes a revival could be successful, citing the recent resurgence of racing in states like Kansas, Nebraska, and Virginia.
According to officials, the Birmingham Race Course has received inquiries about reintroducing horse racing, though no plans have been finalized. Harrington noted, “Horse racing has been declining in recent years in the U.S., but we believe Alabama can be different. Our community is passionate about our thoroughbreds, and bringing them home to race would be monumental.”
As the Magic City Classic Stakes unfolds in New Orleans, Alabama thoroughbred owners, including Kent Gremmels, are hopeful. “I love promoting Alabama thoroughbreds,” Gremmels stated. “The one thing that would make it better is being able to bring our horses home and do it in the state where we live.”
While the immediate future of racing in Alabama remains uncertain, the push to revive this cherished tradition reflects a deep-seated desire to reconnect with the sport that once thrived in the state. Horse racing advocates are encouraging the community to support this initiative, emphasizing that the revival could not only enhance local culture but also provide substantial economic opportunities.
