UPDATE: Paris-based About Premium Content (APC) has just announced the acquisition of global rights to the highly anticipated French crime saga “Blue Gold.” This exclusive drama, produced by Banijay Entertainment’s Authentic Prod for France Télévisions, features acclaimed actress Barbara Probst in a leading role and will debut at the Unifrance Rendez-Vous in Le Havre on September 1, 2023.
“Blue Gold” is an eight-part series directed by Hippolyte Dard, known for his work on “Sam” and “Astrid et Raphaëlle.” The gripping story unfolds in the picturesque yet turbulent backdrop of Southern France, where a severe drought in 2024 reveals buried family secrets and historical mysteries. The official synopsis teases a complex narrative: “When a devastating drought strikes the remote village of Vallouans, it awakens a century-old buried secret, passed down through generations.”
At the center of the drama is Flore, a determined young woman who delves into her family’s shadowy past. Alongside Probst, the cast includes Samir Boitard, Sylvie Granotier, Déborah Krey, Eric Caravaca, and Tom Leeb. The series weaves a tale of mystery and environmental concern, exploring themes of legacy and the impact of climate change.
According to Julie Mateille, head of international sales at APC, “Blue Gold” stands out for its “natural and organic” storyline, which juxtaposes the lush landscapes of the 1980s with today’s harsher realities. “This series is an addictive drama that resonates across generations worldwide,” she stated, emphasizing its unique exploration of water’s significance in familial ties.
The show is set to be delivered later this year, with an official premiere date on French public broadcaster France Télévisions yet to be confirmed. “Blue Gold” is among a slate of premium shows showcased by APC at the Unifrance Rendez-Vous, including “Seasons,” produced by Nicolas Maury, and the flamboyant crime dramedy “The Big Fuck Up.”
As the Unifrance market approaches, Mateille expresses optimism about the event’s potential to connect distributors and buyers in a more relaxed atmosphere. “The Rendez-Vous offers a great opportunity to bring buyers together and encourage them to screen our series,” she noted.
The current content market presents challenges, especially as traditional broadcasters and global platforms are becoming more selective in their acquisitions. Following the crisis that began in 2022, many are prioritizing established intellectual properties and recognizable talent, making it increasingly difficult for new projects to gain traction.
Despite these challenges, Mateille remains hopeful. “Every year, well-crafted and original shows stand out and resonate with audiences,” she concluded.
With “Blue Gold” set to unveil its secrets soon, audiences worldwide are eager to delve into this captivating family saga. Stay tuned for more updates on this exciting series, as it promises to combine elements of crime, mystery, and environmental awareness into a must-watch drama.
