8-Year-Old Girl Killed in Stockton Shooting Just Weeks from Birthday

UPDATE: An 8-year-old girl, identified as Maya Lupian, tragically lost her life in a mass shooting that claimed four victims in Stockton, California, last Saturday. Just two weeks away from her 9th birthday, Maya was a bright third grader whose family has created a GoFundMe page in her memory.

The horrific incident occurred on October 14, 2023, during a crowded birthday celebration for a two-year-old. At least 100 people were in attendance when gunfire erupted, resulting in the deaths of Maya and three others, including a 14-year-old identified as Amari Peterson and a 21-year-old. Eleven additional individuals suffered injuries.

The FBI has joined local law enforcement in a desperate search for the suspects, and authorities have increased the reward for information leading to their capture from $25,000 to $50,000. The community is reeling from the violence, and heartbreaking stories are emerging. Amari Peterson’s father described his son as a “gentle soul,” underscoring the tragic loss felt by families and friends.

In a statement to the Sacramento Bee, the man who leases the venue for the birthday party expressed his devastation. “There’s no business there anymore. It’s a memorial,” he stated, reflecting the profound impact this tragedy has had on the local community.

As investigations continue, authorities urge anyone with information to come forward. The emotional toll of this event is palpable, as families prepare to mourn their loved ones during what should have been a joyous occasion.

Stay tuned for updates as this story develops, and remember to support those affected by this tragedy. The community of Stockton is standing together in the face of unimaginable loss, and the search for justice continues.
