UPDATE: A 19-year-old man has been shot by deputies in Clackamas County after allegedly charging at them with an axe outside Wilsonville on December 5, 2023. Authorities confirm that the incident unfolded late Friday night as deputies responded to a reported domestic disturbance involving a moving vehicle.
According to the Clackamas County District Attorney’s Office, deputies located the vehicle near Southwest Stafford Road and Southwest 65th Avenue, just northeast of Wilsonville. Upon arrival, the suspect, identified as Matthew Evan Cabril, exited the vehicle unexpectedly and ran towards the officers while brandishing an axe over his head.
This alarming encounter was captured on both bodycam and dashcam footage, although the video has not yet been made public. In response to the immediate threat, deputies Madison Stefanovich and Nathan Banfi fired their weapons, striking Cabril a total of three times.
Emergency medical teams from Tualatin Valley Fire & Rescue responded swiftly, with deputies administering lifesaving aid before paramedics arrived. Cabril was transported to OHSU and is currently reported to be in critical condition.
Both deputies involved in the shooting, Stefanovich and Banfi, are on paid administrative leave as per standard protocol. Stefanovich has been with the Clackamas County Sheriff’s Office since 2022, while Banfi has been an officer since 2018 and also joined the sheriff’s department in 2022.
The DA’s office stated, “Pursuant to Clackamas County Critical Incident protocol, this matter will be submitted to a Clackamas County grand jury for an evaluation of the use of deadly physical force.” The investigation is being led by the Lake Oswego and West Linn Police Departments in coordination with the Clackamas County Major Crimes Team.
As this case develops, the DA’s office has indicated that no further comments will be made until after the grand jury proceedings conclude. This incident raises significant concerns about public safety and the protocols surrounding law enforcement responses to domestic disturbances.
