10 Years After His Death, Joe Skinner’s Legacy Lives On

UPDATE: This Friday, December 19, marks a significant milestone as Judy and Scott Skinner host the 10th annual SkinnerStrong Charity Golf Tournament at Shingle Creek Golf Club in Orlando. This event celebrates the life and legacy of their son, Joe Skinner, who tragically passed away from a rare form of leukemia at the age of 17.

Nearly a decade after his death on April 30, 2016, Joe’s story continues to resonate deeply. The SkinnerStrong Foundation, founded by his parents, has raised crucial funds for childhood leukemia research, helping families in similar situations. This tournament is more than just a golf event; it’s a powerful reminder of how grief can inspire action and community support.

Joe Skinner was not just a talented baseball player; he was a beacon of positivity and inclusivity. At Bishop Moore High School, he excelled as a third baseman and leader, earning a scholarship to the University of Central Florida (UCF). His dreams were abruptly cut short when he was diagnosed with hypodiploid acute lymphoblastic leukemia, a rare and aggressive form of cancer.

His battle was swift and harrowing, with only four months between his diagnosis and death. Yet, Joe’s spirit remained unbroken. Even during his toughest times, he managed to attend practices and inspire his teammates. His last at-bat, met with a standing ovation, became a symbol of dignity and resilience.

“Joe’s legacy is about more than baseball. It’s about character, resilience, and love,” said Scott Skinner, Joe’s father. With each swing of the club at the tournament, participants honor Joe’s memory and the lessons he imparted.

The SkinnerStrong Foundation has made a significant impact over the years, funding scholarships and supporting research initiatives. Joe’s story transcends sorrow; it embodies hope and community action. His presence is felt in every dollar raised and every child helped through the foundation’s efforts.

As Friday approaches, the Skinners invite everyone to join in the celebration of Joe’s life. The tournament represents not just a memorial, but a movement against despair, showcasing how one young man’s spirit continues to bring people together.

Joe Skinner’s legacy reminds us all that a light given never truly fades away. In a world filled with challenges, his story shines brightly, inspiring kindness and perseverance.
