YouTuber Colin Furze Unveils Magnetic-Suspension Hoverboard

A new magnetic-suspension hoverboard has emerged, thanks to YouTuber Colin Furze. This innovative creation, which revisits a concept popularized by the film Back to the Future II, utilizes large neodymium magnets to simulate the sensation of hovering, albeit with some limitations.

Furze, known for his unconventional engineering projects, previously showcased a magnetic-suspension bike, but his latest endeavor aims to recreate the iconic hoverboard experience. The design is relatively straightforward: it employs the repulsive force of neodymium magnets positioned on both the board’s base plate and wooden deck.

Engineering Challenges and Solutions

While the concept seems promising, magnetic repulsion creates a precarious balance. To stabilize the board, Furze initially used rods and linear bearings, limiting the board’s movement to vertical displacement. This setup allowed for a hovering effect but transmitted excessive vibrations from the ground to the deck, diminishing the illusion of floating.

Realizing that the design could not support aerial tricks like ollies, Furze shifted his focus to a longboard, which is more suited for transportation rather than tricks. The new iteration retains the powerful magnets but incorporates loosely-fitted pins at the rear. This repositioning not only enhances stability but also preserves the hoverboard aesthetic.

From the rider’s perspective, the board closely resembles a traditional hoverboard, with the unique engineering details hidden from view. Furze claims that riding the board delivers a genuine hoverboard feel, although its functionality is still somewhat limited.

A Look at Alternatives

Furze notes that more advanced methods for achieving true levitation exist, such as using eddy currents over copper or superconductors on a magnetic track. However, these alternatives typically require fixed locations, making them less practical for general use.

Despite the limitations, Furze’s magnetic-suspension hoverboard represents a significant step toward realizing the hoverboard dream. It stands in stark contrast to the handle-less Segway that was introduced in 2015, offering a more authentic experience for enthusiasts.

As Furze continues to explore the boundaries of personal transportation, his latest invention could inspire further developments in hover technology. Whether it captures the public’s imagination remains to be seen, but for now, it provides a fascinating glimpse into the future of mobility.
