The highly anticipated Strade Bianche is poised to deliver a fast-paced spectacle on March 4, 2023, as riders take to the gravel roads of Tuscany under optimal conditions. Following an early spell of warm weather, the gravel is expected to be dry and compact, significantly enhancing the chances for a speedy race. This year’s edition contrasts sharply with previous races that have seen competitors battling cold, wet, and muddy conditions, which often lead to frequent crashes and challenging rides.
Forecasts indicate that both the men’s and women’s races will enjoy clear blue skies with afternoon temperatures reaching around 17°C. Light winds from the east should provide a favorable tail and crosswind across the decisive gravel sectors as riders make their way towards the finish line in Siena. In preparation, most teams will conduct a crucial reconnaissance ride on March 2, covering at least the final 100 kilometers of the race route, focusing on key sectors such as San Martino in Granaia and Monte Santa Marie.
Riders Prepare for Challenging Course Changes
The course this year has undergone minor adjustments, though it remains demanding and selective. Notably, the men’s race distance has been shortened from 215 kilometers to 201 kilometers, while the women’s race will cover 131 kilometers. The women will avoid the Monte Santa Marie sector but will navigate through 11 gravel sectors, totaling 34 kilometers of gravel roads, a reduction from previous editions.
Despite the changes, the competition is expected to be fierce, particularly with standout favorites such as Tadej Pogačar and Demi Vollering likely to make early attacks that could shape the outcome. Pogačar, who has already won the Strade Bianche three times, will see the Colle Pinzuto sector officially named in his honor during a special ceremony on March 2. He shares this distinction with cycling legend Fabian Cancellara, solidifying his status in the sport.
Other notable competitors include Paul Seixas from Decathlon-CMA CGM, Isaac del Toro from UAE Team Emirates-XRG, Tom Pidcock from Pinarello-Q36.5, Pauline Ferrand-Prévot from Visma-Lease a Bike, Kasia Niewiadoma-Phinney from Canyon-SRAM, and Elisa Longo Borghini from UAE Team ADQ. Their presence adds depth to an already competitive field, promising an exciting race day.
Comprehensive Coverage Expected
Race organizer RCS Sport is set to provide live coverage of the Strade Bianche, including detailed race reports and interviews following the events. Editor-at-Large Stephen Farrand will be present in Siena to deliver first-hand insights into the race dynamics and outcomes.
As the riders gear up for this iconic event, the combination of favorable weather and a revised course promises a thrilling showcase of cycling prowess in the heart of Tuscany. The anticipation builds as spectators and teams alike prepare for what could be a memorable day in the world of professional cycling.
