Stellantis, the parent company of Jeep, has announced a significant recall affecting approximately 320,000 plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEVs) due to a fire risk linked to faulty battery cells. The recall specifically targets models with the 4xe designation, including the popular Wrangler and Grand Cherokee variants. This decision follows a report from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), which indicated that some lithium-ion battery packs might be “susceptible to separator damage,” leading to potential short circuits and thermal events.
This is not the first instance where Jeep has faced battery-related recalls. In 2024, the company recalled around 154,000 Wrangler 4xe and Grand Cherokee 4xe vehicles for a similar issue. The current recall, however, marks a substantial increase in scale, encompassing a wider range of model years and a larger number of affected vehicles. The recall includes 228,221 Jeep Wrangler 4xes manufactured from 2020 to 2025 and 91,844 Grand Cherokee 4xe models produced between 2022 and 2026.
What Owners Need to Know
Jeep owners affected by the recall are urged to take immediate precautions. Although the company has not yet identified a permanent solution for the battery issue, it plans to notify all owners of the recalled vehicles by December 2, 2025. An additional communication will follow once a remedy is available.
In the meantime, Jeep recommends that owners park their vehicles outside and away from structures, such as homes or enclosed garages. This precaution is intended to mitigate potential damage in case of a battery fire. Furthermore, owners are advised against fully charging their vehicle’s batteries, as depleted batteries are believed to pose a lower risk of separator damage that could lead to fires.
Jeep is actively working on a solution to this hazardous issue, but until a fix is implemented, it is crucial for owners to remain vigilant. The company is committed to ensuring the safety of its customers and will provide updates as more information becomes available. As always, the safety of drivers and passengers remains a top priority for Stellantis and its brands.
For further information, Jeep owners can monitor communications from Stellantis and check the NHTSA website for updates regarding the recall.
