Sony has patented a groundbreaking AI system designed to assist players who are struggling to progress in video games. This innovative technology, referred to as the ‘AI Generated Ghost Player’, allows players facing challenges, such as difficult puzzles or bosses, to summon a virtual assistant. The ‘Ghost’ can either complete a portion of the game or guide players through the solutions, facilitating their advancement.
According to a report by AllaboutAI, this technology functions as an overlay that interacts with the game environment, mimicking the experience of having a co-op partner. The patent includes various modes, enabling users to select the type of assistance they require during gameplay. This flexibility could significantly enhance the gaming experience for players who find themselves stuck.
The patent was filed internationally in 2024, but it has recently garnered attention following a status update. The abstract of the patent details a system that provides “assistance during gameplay of a video game.” It outlines a method where the player controls a character while the system detects the selection of ghost assistance, potentially linking to an AI engine that responds to natural-language queries and renders the ghost character within the game.
The introduction of this technology addresses a common issue faced by gamers. As noted in the patent, “Although video game technology has seen many advances, some players find themselves in need of assistance.” It acknowledges that games can become increasingly complex, leading less experienced players to abandon their gaming sessions when faced with challenges. While players can seek help through online resources or gameplay videos, this process can be time-consuming and often fails to address specific problems in real-time.
Sony’s exploration of AI-driven solutions is not new. In 2022, a leaked video showcased Sharwin Raghoebardajal, PlayStation’s director of software engineering, interacting with an early AI prototype of the character Aloy from the popular game Horizon Zero Dawn. This indicates a broader commitment within Sony to enhance player experiences through advanced technology.
Other companies in the gaming industry, such as Microsoft, are also actively pursuing AI integration to provide similar support systems. This trend reflects a growing recognition of the potential for AI to transform how players engage with video games, making them more accessible and enjoyable for a wider audience.
As video games continue to evolve, innovations like the AI ‘Ghost Player’ may play a crucial role in shaping the future of gaming, ensuring that players can navigate challenges effectively and enjoy their gaming experiences without unnecessary frustration.
