The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) has commenced work on the resurfacing of state Route 93, also known as Broad Street. This project extends from 15th Street in West Hazleton to the border of Carbon and Luzerne counties, just outside the limits of Hazleton. The total investment for this initiative amounts to $3,796,370, with completion anticipated by November 2025, according to PennDOT’s PA projects construction map.
Project Details and Timeline
Rich Roman, the District 4 Executive at PennDOT, stated that while there will be no detours during the resurfacing process, some lane restrictions will be in effect. “We’re milling the existing pavement surface, putting back new asphalt, and making drainage repairs, pipe replacements, and resurfacing the roadway,” Roman explained.
The contract for the project has been awarded to Pennsy Supply, based in Harrisburg, with funding sourced from transportation budgets. Crews are set to begin resurfacing from the Banks Township line to Poplar Street in Hazleton on August 26, 2025.
“Paving should be done this season; everything is weather-dependent,” Roman noted. He provided an update indicating that milling of the current surface has already commenced, with work progressing from the Carbon County line toward the project’s opposite end.
No Changes to Road Configuration
It is important to highlight that the roads will maintain their current configuration throughout this project. There are no plans for additional lanes or expansion of the roadways. This resurfacing work connects to a previous paving project on state Route 93, which was completed several years ago, stretching from 15th Street in West Hazleton into Sugarloaf Township.
PennDOT aims to enhance the safety and functionality of this vital stretch of roadway, ensuring that it meets the needs of local commuters and visitors alike. The project reflects ongoing efforts to improve transportation infrastructure across the region, contributing to better travel conditions for all users.
