Qualcomm has introduced Quick Charge 5+, the latest iteration of its battery charging technology, designed to deliver more efficient power management. This new version intelligently adapts power flow to the specific device being charged, enhancing both speed and safety.
First launched in 2020, Quick Charge 5 allows charging speeds of up to 50% in just five minutes using a maximum of 100W of power. Qualcomm claims that its charging protocol is the leading method for rapid charging across a range of compatible devices and accessories, including wall chargers, car chargers, and power banks.
Improved Performance and Efficiency
The company highlights that Quick Charge 5+ offers significant advantages over other high-voltage charging methods. With a focus on maintaining cooler temperatures during charging, this technology promises consistent performance, which could enhance long-term battery health. To achieve this, Quick Charge 5+ employs innovative techniques that involve using lower voltage at higher currents—specifically, up to 20V at 7A.
Qualcomm explains, “By intelligently recognizing which device it’s connected to and dynamically controlling power flow, performance isn’t compromised while charging. Its reduced voltage approach lowers costs, delivering higher value alongside greater efficiency.” This approach contrasts with solutions limited to 5A, which often require higher voltages to achieve similar wattage, leading to increased heat and decreased efficiency.
Upcoming Launches and Compatibility
The first smartphones featuring Quick Charge 5+ technology are set to be unveiled at the Snapdragon Summit 2025, scheduled for September 23-25. Alongside these devices, new charging accessories supporting the Quick Charge 5+ standard will also be released later this year.
Importantly, Quick Charge 5+ maintains backward compatibility with previous generations of Quick Charge technology, ensuring that existing users can still benefit from this upgrade without needing to replace their current charging devices.
As the demand for faster and more efficient charging solutions continues to grow, Qualcomm’s innovations in battery technology position the company at the forefront of the industry, promising to enhance user experiences across a wide array of devices.
