Lift 4 at Cuchara Mountain Park has officially resumed operations, marking its first run in decades. The long-awaited reopening took place on Saturday, with skiers eagerly boarding the lift for the first time since it was decommissioned. This milestone follows extensive renovations led by the nonprofit Panadero Ski Corporation, which has worked tirelessly to revitalize the ski area in southern Colorado.
At precisely 09:30 on the opening day, local skiers Sean Parker and Chelsey Parker enjoyed the honor of riding the first chair up the mountain. The functioning of Lift 4 has been viewed as a significant achievement in the efforts to restore Cuchara as a viable ski destination. Earlier this month, the Panadero Ski Corporation received its operating license from the state, completing a series of hurdles that included considerable fundraising efforts.
For the past two winters, skiers relied on a “ski bus” to transport them to the top of the slopes while the lift was under repair. Now, with Lift 4 operational, the ski area aims to offer lift-serviced skiing for the upcoming season. Tickets are priced at $45, while a season pass will cost $250. The park plans to operate on Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays, providing access to affordable skiing in the region.
The overarching goal of the renovation has been to make skiing accessible to the local community, particularly in a low-income area of Colorado. Ken Clayton, a board member of Panadero, emphasized the commitment to engaging youth and families who may not have the means to ski elsewhere. “We’re really focused on getting youth on that mountain, people that can’t afford to go anywhere else,” Clayton stated. “We hope they can come up here. We’ve got a full rental fleet now of skis and snowboards, so we’re trying to make it a one-stop shop for people who want to get into the sport.”
The successful reopening of Lift 4 is a testament to the dedication of the Panadero Ski Corporation and the community’s support. The ski area revival aims not only to enhance recreational opportunities in Cuchara Mountain Park but also to create a welcoming environment for newcomers to the sport of skiing.
As Cuchara embarks on this new chapter, the anticipation from local residents and visitors alike is palpable. With affordable access to winter sports, the park hopes to foster a love for skiing among future generations, ensuring that Cuchara remains a cherished destination for years to come.
