Elon Musk, CEO of Tesla, has once again clarified that the company has no intentions of producing an electric motorcycle. Responding to a viral post on X, Musk emphasized that safety concerns prevent Tesla from entering the motorcycle market. The discussion ignited after user @Moandbhr shared an AI-generated video depicting Musk on an imaginative Tesla motorcycle, which garnered over 3.1 million views.
In his reply, Musk stated, “Never happening, as we can’t make motorcycles safe. For Community Notes, my near-death experience was on a road bike. Dirt bikes are safe if you ride carefully, as you can’t be smashed by a truck.” His comment reflects a longstanding apprehension about motorcycle safety, particularly in urban environments where larger vehicles pose significant risks.
Musk’s Ongoing Concerns About Motorcycles
This is not the first time Musk has voiced his reservations about motorcycles. In a post from December 2019, he responded to inquiries about Tesla’s potential ATV by reiterating his stance against road-going motorcycles. While he expressed enthusiasm for electric all-terrain vehicles, he firmly stated that motorcycles would not be part of Tesla’s future offerings.
Musk’s own experiences have shaped his views on motorcycles. He mentioned being struck by a truck while riding a motorcycle at the age of 17, which contributed to his belief that these vehicles are too dangerous for public roads. He did, however, express interest in the concept of electric dirt bikes, noting they are less likely to encounter large vehicles.
Future Possibilities for Tesla
Despite his firm stance against road motorcycles, Musk’s comments on electric dirt bikes suggest that there could be room for innovation within specific categories. As electric vehicles continue to gain popularity, the market for electric recreational vehicles may expand. Products like the Cybertruck and the upcoming Robovan could potentially integrate two-wheeled vehicles into their ecosystems, perhaps as accessories for outdoor enthusiasts.
While Tesla’s focus remains on four-wheeled vehicles, Musk’s insights underline the challenges and considerations that accompany the development of any new vehicle category. His commitment to safety standards suggests that any future explorations into two-wheeled electric vehicles will prioritize rider protection, reflecting Musk’s own experiences and the company’s ethos.
As Tesla continues to innovate in the electric vehicle sector, the conversation around motorcycles may evolve, but for now, Musk’s position remains clear: Tesla will not produce electric motorcycles.
