Disney+ has officially integrated support for HDR10+, enhancing its streaming service on select Samsung smart TVs and monitors. This move aligns with the growing trend of advanced imaging technologies that offer improved picture quality through scene-by-scene metadata adjustments.
HDR10+, an evolution of the HDR10 standard, aims to provide viewers with enhanced contrast and more vivid colors. According to Inbeom Kim, Vice President of Visual Display Business at Samsung Electronics, “HDR10+ revolutionizes the way we enjoy content, offering enhanced contrast and more vivid colors for an unparalleled viewing experience.” This integration signifies Samsung’s commitment to HDR10+ as a royalty-free alternative to the widely adopted Dolby Vision HDR, which is supported by many TV manufacturers except for Samsung.
This new capability is available on a variety of Samsung models, specifically the Crystal UHD TVs from 2018 onward, including the latest Neo QLED 8K, Neo QLED 4K, OLED, The Frame Pro, The Frame, and QLED TVs.
Expanding HDR10+ Content Library
As of now, Disney+ boasts over 1,000 titles from Hulu available in HDR10+ within the Disney+ app. The streaming service has plans to broaden its HDR10+ offerings, aiming to include more content from both Disney+ and Hulu in the future. This expansion is part of a broader effort by streaming platforms to enhance viewer experience through advanced technologies.
While HDR10+ has not yet reached the popularity of Dolby Vision, it is gaining traction. Netflix added support for HDR10+ in March 2023, following earlier adoptions by services like Apple TV+ and Amazon Prime Video. The increasing presence of HDR10+ across multiple platforms indicates a growing recognition of its benefits in delivering high-quality viewing experiences.
Samsung’s push for HDR10+ reflects its strategy to collaborate with various partners to expand support across its product range and the streaming landscape. The company’s commitment to this technology is evident as it seeks to enhance the appeal of its devices in an increasingly competitive market.
As HDR10+ continues to evolve, Disney+ users with compatible Samsung devices can look forward to a richer, more immersive viewing experience, marking a significant step forward in the streaming industry.
