Apple has officially launched a native YouTube app for its Vision Pro headset, addressing a significant gap in the device’s offerings. This development comes nearly two years after the Vision Pro’s initial release, during which users could only access YouTube through the Safari web browser. The native app is designed to optimize the viewing experience, allowing users to enjoy 3D and VR180 videos and transforming each video into a “spatial watch experience.”
The Vision Pro is marketed as a “personal theater,” featuring a crisp OLED display and support for immersive content. The new YouTube app enhances the platform’s capabilities by supporting high-resolution 8K videos, particularly on the recently released M5 Vision Pro model. According to the app’s store listing, the immersive features cater to a wide range of video formats, including 3D and VR180.
Despite launching with over 600 apps, several popular applications, including Netflix and Spotify, were not available at the time of the headset’s debut. Apple indicated that more than 1 million iOS and iPadOS apps are compatible with the Vision Pro, yet the absence of major platforms like YouTube has been a notable omission.
The Vision Pro, priced at $3,499, has faced challenges in achieving widespread consumer adoption. While the hardware is regarded as robust, offering features such as spatial audio support, the high price point has limited its market impact. Nonetheless, the addition of a native YouTube app could enhance user engagement and broaden the appeal of the device.
As Apple continues to expand its ecosystem, the introduction of the YouTube app marks an important step in enriching the content experience for Vision Pro users. With a growing collection of immersive films in both 8K and 180-degree formats, the Vision Pro aims to solidify its position in the competitive landscape of virtual reality and augmented reality devices.
