Apple has officially launched the iPhone 17e, a new budget-friendly smartphone that incorporates several high-end features while maintaining an accessible price point. This announcement marks a shift in Apple’s approach to its lower-tier models, as the company commits to annual updates for its “e” series. The iPhone 17e is now set to cater to users seeking a balance between functionality and cost.
Pricing and Storage Changes
The starting price for the iPhone 17e is set at $599, but Apple has made a significant change to its storage offerings. The base model now comes with 256GB of internal storage, eliminating the previous 128GB option. This upgrade effectively doubles the storage capacity for the same price. For users requiring even more space, a 512GB variant is available for $799, which is $100 less than the comparable model from the previous generation.
In terms of design, the iPhone 17e maintains the familiar 6.1-inch form factor and will be offered in classic black and white, along with a new “soft pink” option. The device’s display benefits from the enhanced Ceramic Shield 2 technology, promising improved scratch resistance and reduced glare compared to its predecessor.
Performance and Connectivity Enhancements
A notable feature introduced with the iPhone 17e is the inclusion of MagSafe technology. While the prior model supported basic wireless charging, it lacked the magnetic capabilities that enhance the overall iPhone experience. With MagSafe support, users can now utilize magnetic accessories such as wallets and battery packs, as well as enjoy faster 15W Qi2 wireless charging, which is twice as fast as the previous model.
The iPhone 17e is powered by the same A19 chip used in the standard iPhone 17, providing the necessary processing power for advanced features. Connectivity also sees improvements with the introduction of the new C1X cellular modem, which Apple claims is up to twice as fast as its predecessor, enhancing both power efficiency and signal reliability. The device continues to hold an IP68 rating for water resistance and supports vital safety features, such as Emergency SOS via satellite.
The camera system includes a 48MP Fusion sensor, which, despite having a single hardware lens, employs sensor cropping techniques to deliver what Apple describes as “optical-quality 2x Telephoto” performance. This allows users to capture detailed portraits and 4K Dolby Vision video, enhancing the overall photography experience.
Pre-orders for the iPhone 17e will commence on March 4, 2024, at 06:15 PT / 09:15 ET. The device will officially launch in retail stores on March 11, 2024. As Apple continues to innovate and expand its product offerings, the iPhone 17e represents a strategic move to make advanced technology more accessible to a broader audience.
